Call for papers on women and slavery in medieval Islamic society
We seek contributors to a volume of 10-12 papers on courtesans, concubines and qiyān over the span of Islamic/Near Eastern history, 600-1800 C.E.
The requirements are that the contribution be an original piece of scholarship that has, as its primary topic, the lives and contributions of the women typically referred to in English-language scholarship as concubines, courtesans or slave singers/performers. We fully anticipate, of course, that the papers will address such wider topics as gender, slavery, law and society, cultural production, and social relations at a variety of points and places in Islamic/Near Eastern history.
The project is to be edited by Matthew Gordon (Miami University) and Kathryn Hain (The University of Utah). We are in discussion with academic publishers. The deadline for final submission is July 1, 2013. We ask that the papers should be between 7,000-10,000 words and should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages (including text, notes, and figures) and be submitted electronically as a Word document. The papers will be peer-reviewed.
We ask that you submit a 1-2 page C.V. and a letter of interest with an abstract of 250 words as a MS Word document to kathrynhain@gmail.com <mailto:kathrynhain@gmail.com> by August 1, 2012.
