Appel à contribution : “Death, graves and the Hereafter in Islam: Muslim perception of the last things in the Middle Ages and today”, Archiv Orientalni – limite : 30 nov.2014.
International peer-reviewed, mostly English written journal Archiv Orientální (listed in AHCI and SCOPUS, accessible via EBSCO and PROQUEST, for more info visit http://aror.orient.cas.cz), published by the Oriental Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague, announces call for papers for its special issue Death, graves and the Hereafter in Islam: Muslim perception of the last things in the Middle Ages and today to be published in 2015.
Like in other religions, death, graves, their visitation and diverse ideas about the Hereafter play a crucial role also in Islam. In this regard, the practices of most Muslims clearly contradict the statements of normative Islam. Despite the centuries of Islamic jurists’ effort to submit existing manners and customs to the Islamic law, we can argue that nowhere else in Islam the gap between the normative and the popular religiosity reached such depth. Such contradictions have manifested themselves throughout the Islamic history and we can still observe controversies regarding graves all over the Islamic world. The question of tombs and their visitation repeatedly becomes a “battlefield” among followers of different Islamic streams, for example Salafis and Sufis.
The main objective of the special issue is to provide a platform to study the subject from different points of view (the Last Things in Islam as a legal problem, as a distinctive part of Muslim folklore, as a subject of Islamic writings, etc.) and in different cultural milieus (contributions covering all Islamic regions, i.e. those of the Middle East, Turkey, Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, and China are welcome) in order to contribute to the current state of research.
We are inviting proposals for contribution accompanied by a short abstract (cca 300 words).
The deadline for submitting articles will be November 30, 2014.
We welcome contributions based on independent research, preferably written in English. They must be original and should not have been published previously or be under consideration for publication while being evaluated for Archiv Orientální.
