Receiving Aristotle’s De caelo in the Greek, Arabic, and Latin Traditions

Text receptions are commonly framed within the paradigm of information transfers. This depiction of a technical, if not mechanical, process aligns with the conventional separation of philology and philosophy, discerning two distinct steps within the reception phenomenon: 1) the transmission of ancient texts and 2) their influence on later philosophical doctrines. A new approach that acknowledges the intricate interplay between the accessibility of a source in a specific place and time and the philosophical doctrines it inspired is particularly relevant in the context of Aristotle’s De caelo. As only few commentaries and translations have survived in their entirety, the current state of sources for this work does not reflect the pluralism and complexity of its reception, from Athens to Alexandria, Baghdad to Toledo, and Byzantium to the West. Several research projects are currently underway to reconstruct the sources available to ancient scholars regarding De caelo, (among which a new edition of William of Moerbeke’s Latin translation as part of the Aristoteles Latinus project), additionally shedding light on their own influence over the selective preservation and transformation of text witnesses.

The Aristoteles Latinus and the De Wulf-Mansion Centre of KU Leuven are organizing a conference with the aim of bringing together these initiatives and thus illuminating the intricate and far-reaching influence of On the Heavens on cosmology, physics and theology. This holistic approach, encompassing both philological and conceptual dimensions, enables a collective exploration of the textual, philosophical and pedagogical practices that shape the tradition of De caelo, inviting us to reflexively question our own reception of Aristotle and its reception dynamics.
