« The presence of cryptographic writings and a fascination with unusual alphabets has been well documented in Arabic textual tradition since at least the eleventh century. This interest seems to have served both and interest in the occult, and a practical need for confidentiality in different contexts. One of the most notable works in this context is the “Book of the Passionate Desire” (also known as “Ancient Alphabets and Hieroglyphic Characters”) attributed to the mysterious 10th-century alchemist Ibn al-Wahshiyya. In this presentation, we will introduce you to the complex textual history of this composite work (which seems to be partly a hybrid of Western and Eastern traditions), explore its intertextual relationship to other books of the genre, and speculate on its possible “Sits im Leben”. »
