Appel à contribution: Oaths in Long Late Antiquity, International Hybrid Conference, Hambourg, 21-22/10/2024 (limite: 26 avril 2024)
The research group ‘Loyalty Oaths in the Roman, Byzantine and Early Islamicate Legal Spheres’ (LORILS, 2023–24) is delighted to welcome proposals for an upcoming international hybrid conference on ‘Oaths in Long Late Antiquity’.
The conference will treat the themes of oaths, covenants, pacts, agreements, and loyalty in political and legal culture. Possible approaches include Legal History, Social History, Cultural History, and Language and Literature. The scope of the conference includes the Roman, Sasanian, Byzantine and early Islamic Empires, Judaism, Eastern Christianity and Latin Europe. Papers will be 20 minutes in duration, followed by discussion.
LORILS is a collaboration between members of the SCORE team and the Legal History Department at the University of Groningen. LORILS funding allows Hamburg and Groningen staff to participate in the conference free of charge, but third-party affiliates will need to meet their own expenses if participating in person. Online participation (via Zoom) will be free to all.
If you are interested in participating, please email an abstract of around 200 words and a biography of around 100 words to the organisers, Alasdair Grant (alasdair.grant@uni-hamburg.de) and Daphne Penna (d.penna@rug.nl) by Friday 26 April 2024. Applicants will be informed of the organisers’ decision by Friday 10 May 2024. Queries are welcome at any time.
