Four-year PhD position in Late Antique Meteorology
In the Department of History at Ghent University (Belgium), one Phd studentship is available for a period of up to four years as part of research project on late antique meteorology (A.D. 300-800) (“Every thunder means something’. Meteorology, culture and the self in Late Antiquity”, FWO Senior research project nr. G034023N, supervisors: Peter Van Nuffelen and Steven Vanden Broecke). The project’s aim is to: *establish a digital corpus of late antique meteorological texts and artefacts *produce a pioneering in-depth study of the societal implantation of late antique meteorological concepts and practices* offer a much-needed supplement to the current emphasis on catastrophe (pandemics, earthquakes, climate change) in the study of late antique environmental history Interested candidates are welcome to request the complete project description from Prof. Peter Van Nuffelen (peter.vannuffelen[at]ugent.be).
Your profile:
You have obtained a master’s degree in a relevant discipline (or will possess one by 1/1/2024) and have an excellent knowledge of Greek and/or Latin. Acquaintance with Syriac, or willingness to learn this language, is advantageous, as are good IT-skills (e.g., in digital humanities and relational database-building). You have an active interest in history, literature, and the history of science. You are capable of working independently, but are also keenly interested in joining and supporting an active local community in late ancient history and the history of science.
Your duties:
Besides writing a PhD on a circumscribed corpus of textual and material sources, you will contribute to a database gathering information on late antique meteorology, co-organise a conference, do limited amounts of teaching and administrative duties, and contribute to other research carried out within the project.

The successful candidate is expected to start ideally on 1/10/2023, and on 1/1/2024 at the latest.
S/he is expected to reside in Belgium for the duration of her/his contract.
