Pour info :
the Aga Khan University officially launched the new Indian Ocean programme webpages. This launch was done during our summer school on Asian and Indian Ocean studies in partnership with the Catholica University, Lisbon.
The Muslim Cultures of the Indian Ocean programme supports the protection, conservation and heritage management of Indian Ocean cultures, and our research focuses on texts, objects, cities, and monuments. Current research topics involve many international partnerships and include Muslims and the sea, archaeology of trading networks, economics, politics, diasporas, identity, Sufism, and Islamisation.
Our knowledge about Muslim arts and cultures was built around the Mediterranean Sea, placing Europeans in the centre of the picture and the map.
The Indian Ocean is a centre, not a periphery, for the understanding of Muslim cultures since the sea was a link between cities, ports, and people in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
