JOB DESCRIPTION

The Faculty of Religion and Theology is looking for a full professor (0,8-1,0) for the Chair of Religious Studies. The chair will focus on the entanglement of religions in a historical context and will develop the theoretical and/or empirical framework necessary to create (new) conceptual approaches of these entanglements. The holder of the chair will develop new insights in currently used methodologies and terminologies and will be aware of the need to revise concepts in the light of decolonization and inclusivity. The chair will focus in particular on the development of the religions in the Near East or Southern Europe during the period between Late Antiquity and Modernity. The research will be conducted in close cooperation with the historical research group, but will also be realized in joint cooperation with the philosophical, systematic and empirical research groups within the Faculty. Moreover, he/she will also engage in cross-disciplinary research together with colleagues from other faculties. The holder of the chair will have particular expertise in the field of history of the above-mentioned regions.

REQUIREMENTS

  • hold a PhD degree and to have been engaged subsequently in quality research in his/her field, witnessed by international publications as well as acknowledgement as an expert in the field
  • be a trained historian, with a keen interest in conceptual approaches
  • be an expert in one the fields of religious entanglements quoted in the description.
  • have been successful in attracting substantial research funds
  • be able to build relationships in a multidisciplinary environment, across departmental and faculty borders
  • to contribute to a climate of greater diversity and inclusivity of the Faculty, respecting the different traditions of belief present at the Faculty
  • to be fluent in Dutch and English or to be willing to learn Dutch

WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €5,749 (H2) and a maximum €8,371 (H2), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

On the Department ‘Texts and Traditions’. 
The Department of Texts and Traditions studies the wide range of religious scriptures, their history, interpretation and reception. It also studies the historical dynamics of religions such as  ideas, material heritage, social dynamics. The department has research groups focusing on Hebrew Bible and DH, Early Christianity, Reformation, Jewish Studies, Islam and  Buddhism.
