Post-Doc : cultural brokerage in pre-modern Islam, Jerusalem (limite : ?)
The aim of the research group is to address the modes and effects of cultural brokerage in pre-modern Islam. It will be a collaborative attempt by historians of pre-modern Islam to address the social dynamics behind a variety of cultural changes that took place in pre-modern Muslim societies. These changes occurred in a variety of spheres, including political cultures; literary themes and structures; religious ideas and practices; mercantile institutions; and the transmission of classical sciences. Our goals are (1) to trace the individuals who brokered various cultural commodities in the course of processes that resulted in the emergence of Islamic ideologies, theologies, modes of thought, technological developments, and artistic forms; and (2) to assess the circumstances—whether social, political, or cultural—in which cultural brokers operated. These objectives are premised on the idea that combined inquiries into cultural phenomena and social circumstances are crucial for understanding the formation of Islamic civilization. Beyond an account of cultural processes, enterprises, and developments, the group will seek to trace the ingredients of successful cultural integration and symbiosis in a period that saw the formation of an Islamic civilization.
