The study of the early Islamic period represents a much debated area of research among scholars. Approaching this period through the prism of interdisciplinarity, enables specialists to highlight diverse sources (graffiti, coins, narrative sources, and names) and various methodological approaches exploited by the historians of Early Islam. Inscriptions testify to a culture of writing among the first Muslims and open the door to fresh perspectives from which to study their beliefs on a micro-historical scale. They also make it possible to arrive at more comprehensive conclusions, derived from a multitude of extant examples. Numismatics allows us, through a nuanced engagement with the narrative sources, to refine chronology and to approach structures of power in their discursive, ideological and economic materiality. Scholars of Early Islam are increasingly interested in understanding the mechanisms of transmission and narrative sources also help to understand the construction of a memorial history . This session aims to discuss each of these approaches to understanding the early Islamic period through significant and demonstrable examples. Not only do these papers discuss various interdisciplinary approaches to studying the early Islamic period, but, together, they showcase three different approaches to modern scholarship on this period.
